St. Mark, the patron saint of Venice and the Evangelist, is represented in the form of a lion. Initially intended as a watchtower for ships and later used as a lighthouse, the bell tower is lovingly called the " the master of the house " by Venetians and has become one of the symbols of Italy. The current tower is a reconstruction completed in 1912, the previous one having collapsed in 1902.
